The Foundation Programme

We provide thirty-six, two year, foundation programmes offering a range of hospital based specialties as well as community placements such as Psychiatry, Palliative Care and General Practice.  The F1 and F2 year each consists of three, four month placements offering a wide range of training experiences and opportunities in line with the Foundation Curriculum. All F1 doctors attend a mandatory induction programme which includes shadowing.

All foundation doctors are assigned a dedicated Educational and Clinical Supervisor.

The F1 programme consists of twice weekly one hour protected core teaching sessions. The F2 teaching is a half day teaching programme, with approximately six sessions per rotation. All teaching is bleep free. All core teaching is in person in the Post Graduate Education centre with an option to attend via Teams in some circumstances. We have a wide range of non-core teaching opportunities such as weekly Grand Round, regular Schwartz rounds, and department teaching and lots of opportunities.

Wellbeing

Our wellbeing and peer support sessions are incorporated into core teaching. We have an F1 mentor scheme run by our F2 doctors.

All foundation doctors attend a mandatory full day of simulation training in both their F1 and F2 year.  There are many more opportunities to be involved in simulation training, including assisting with simulation for Medical Student.

There is a regular Foundation Doctors’ Forum which is chaired by the Chief Executive. This is an informal meeting where foundation doctors can discuss anything they wish directly with the CEO and a panel consisting of the Executive Team and Senior Management.
